Standard
Guarding is in its blood, its pray instinct is very high. Already at a very early age, 8-10 week-old puppies behave sturdily for their age barking at strangers or anything unusual to them. Their attack is devastating due to their speed and strength.

Distribution

The distribution of the breed was hindered by several factors and one of which almost led to its extinction. Both factors are results of the XX. century. At the end of the XIX. century techniques of stock-raising changed, grazing, highscale farming replaces wandering, meat does not come as a live animal, on feet, but already processed, delivered by vehicle. Due to the termination of fundamental activities, the breed’s number decreased continuously, but the ultimate verdict came with I. and II. worldwar. There was no escape from starvation and guns. A vast number of dogs fell a victim to protecting its family and their farm and belongings at the cost of their lifes. Along with the restoration of the country and life becoming normal again people tried to save and revitalize their lifes and one of their legacy, the Cane Corso. In those times it was tradtitional to recover the Corso via cross breeding. Cross breeding was performed with abruzzo to increase weight and size, with sleuth to improve hunting vein, with greyhound to gain speed, with mastino or dog of malorca. Sadly there are some of these blendings even today e.g. to increase aggressiveness pitbull - corso, etc... These half-breeds were not intended to be used in breeding, nevertheless they had impact on some individuals that can be recognized by longer fur, too light appearance, loose, sagging skin etc. Overall these intentions were in vain as the modification of a specific attribute resulted in a lot of drawbacks. Since it is only the real Cane Corso that has the perfect strength, dynamics, speed and other unique characteristics in harmony with appearance.

Between 1968 and 1987 there were several expeditions to south Italy, where they discovered and registered approx. 20 true-bred individuals. They represented some 11 different bloodlines.

These were paired with an already hand-picked stock. This was the beginning of a very important back-breeding program. A couple individuals were transported to Mantova where they continued work. Here we have to acknowledge some names that were the foundations of this overall program: Alké, Aliot, Babak, Mirak, Dauno - Mirak és Aliot fia, Brina, Tipsi, Cocab.

At the same time via a different line and with different breeding technique, in another area the recovery program also started. Obviously different individuals were the starting point: e.g. Vito Indiveri -- Plud, Francesco Ardemagni -- Boris, Sergio Nardi -- Baal, Capriati --Rudus.

In 1987, S.A.C.C, the Italian Cane Corso Club was formed with Stefano Gandolfi as president. Their goal was to recover the breed, the registration of individuals and to gain international recognition for the breed.
