Evolution of name and history

As regards the name “Corso”, this is the name that people living in the south assign to this dog beyond memory. There were variations - considering the evolution of the name - “Can-Huzz” naming at the border of Calabro - Lucano, “Can Coursicu, cursican” between Luciana, Sannio and Irpinia. In every case, the etimology refers to the typical characteritic of the breed, strength, robustness. This stem can be considered mutual with the name “corsiero” that referred to the middle-age martial horse, charger. Due to its protection features many attach the name to the Latin “cohors” meaning farmyard, fence, or assign to the notion of protecting body or person. Others consider that it derives from the Greek “cortos” meaning a fenced farmyard. For long, people of Sicily used simply the name “Sicilian dog” as they felt this proud breed their very own. It can be discovered in a couple of family cognizance, flag.

Honour of Italian people is also expressed by the fact that there are mythical stories and legends about the Corso. Even these days we are familiar with some of them, in these myths the dogs are always a symbol of loyalty and strength. Beyond written and narrative stories, we can discover the dog’s figure and name that become essential to people on countless articles of personal use and art crafts, reliefs, majolicas, engravings, mosaics. In Wittoria these days if people play tombola/raffle around Christmas, when they hear the word “Giovanotto” (which is also a tombola figure) people think straight of “52”, a protection dog that has become a legend. (Unfortunatelly the dog passed away in tragic circumstances, torn apart by a lion.) This dog everybody remebers was called “52”. There wer actually two dogs called “52”, father and son. They were tough, martial dogs held on chains. At that time it was common to arrange dog fights. It is a cruel, brutal event that can not be tolerated any more. According to the story one day they arranged one such dog fight. The son “52” had to fight against a mastiff. The father “52” was chained to a cart loaded full of sacks. The fight was horrible and brutal. At the end the son “52” got to the ground, rattled, almost died, but then suddenly a strange thing happened. The father “52” whined and was jumping, he felt his son was in danger. He gathered all his strength and started to run pulling the cart after himself for a while, then tearing the chain he arrived at the scene and went for the killer dog, saving his son. When his master spoke about the dog later after the dog passed away he simply said “HE WAS STRONG, HE WAS LOYAL - HE WAS A CORSO”.

A narrative by Fernando Casolino tells us a story when: On an autumn afternoon a mule caravan escorted by Corsos started off to the lakes of Monticchio, Badia. Suddenly a snow storm arrived, covering also the lakes. Unexpectedly Satan appeared as a goat buck visual, scaring the caravan to stop. The Corsos getting wild went for the visual - biting the air - when at the height, from the rock where there was a sanctuary, the flaming sword of arcangel Michael lift off to the sky. Everybody settled and the caravan arrived to the monastery. The next morning the snow melted and blooming water lilys appeared in the lake. The leafs shaped the hoofs of mules, the flowers shaped the footprints of Corsos.
